First Choice To Make – MTL vs DTL?

If you’re brand new to vaping you may want to read this vape beginners guide first so that you can make the right choice when it comes to buying your first vape set up!

So, MTL vs DTL? MTL or Mouth to lung, that’s when you draw the vaper into your mouth and inhale from there – like you would a cigarette. DTL or Direct to lung (otherwise known as Sub-Ohm vaping), that’s when you draw the vaper directly into your lungs from the device.

Want to know how e-cigarettes work? Read our guide!

MTL is what cigarette smokers do, since airflow through a cigarette is so restricted and smoke so noxious, that a DTL hit would send you into spasms of pain.

Your first DTL hit on a vape might do the same, if you are a smoker but take note. That’s just the feeling of your smoke-habituated lungs in shock. Once all that tar is out of your lungs (and over time, it will go), you won’t feel any discomfort. I do speak from experience on that one.

Now, the majority of vaping devices are designed for DTL use, although there are more and more MTL options coming out these days. It is therefore recommended that you open your mind to the idea of DTL inhaling. This will broaden your horizons and the variety of incredible options open to you.

People start vaping for different reasons. Different reasons call for different gear.

I started vaping because I was addicted to nicotine but I absolutely hated cigarettes and the effect they had on my lungs. I was prepared to take on a direct to lung device.

Some smokers, especially ones who love smoking, love the tobacco taste and the act of smoking a cigarette. You will be more inclined to take a shine to a mouth to lung device like an all-in-one or cigalike, along with a tobacco flavored, high nicotine e-liquid. You’ll be wanting to replicate the act of smoking as closely as possible and with a great MTL device and e-liquid like Black Note you won’t be far off.

As a reviewer, I’ve had the opportunity to sample gear of every kind. From kits made for brave newbies who want to experience the massive cloud, flavor and DTL action that sets vaping apart from smokes. To MTL devices and MTL/DTL crossover products that can see you through from a familiar feeling MTL to the brand new world of DTL vaping.

I live in a country that’s rather far behind on the vaping scene and, already, I’m exposed to a selection of devices that outnumber the cigarette brands available here.

The difference is, vaping is a whole lot more involved a habit than smoking. The devices differ in big ways, some of them would be impossible for a newbie to master, some of them might be just the thing to put a newbie off the idea of vaping for life! I’ve read numerous times of people that just have started out with the wrong vape kit and then given up! Help is needed…and that’s what this article is all about. We want you to get the best out of your vaping journey and to do that you need to have the best vape kit that works for you.

What Is A Good Beginner Vape Kit?

First up…are you a smoker? If so, what type of smoker are you? Do you consider yourself a die-hard tobacco and nicotine fiend (Type 1)/MTL or do you (and I was like this) find yourself wishing there were bubblegum flavored cigarettes because you like blowing smoke rings but can’t freaking stand the taste of cigaretter anymore (Type 2)/DTL?

Those of you who fall into the type 1 category. I recommend you start with an MTL vape device or a kit that’s tailor-made to deliver a nicotine punch, in a format that is as cigarette like as possible, ie: an all-in-one vape kit.

Before you pop into the nearest vaping store to pick up some random all-in-one though…do your homework. Learn the basics: how is your e-liquid ‘atomised’ and what studies are available to back up your decision to make the change from smoking to vaping.

There’s more to vaping that having a lighter full of gas and an ashtray. Knowing your stuff when it comes to your habit of choice will get you very, very, very far.

A good rule of thumb to follow is this. If the vape kit on the shelf in front of you hasn’t been reviewed by at least 3 popular vaping sites or YouTubers, steer well clear! The first vaping device I tried, saw me returning to smoking for a good few years, it was that bad! I hadn’t done my homework, do yours!

Those of you who’re Type 2/DTL, potential flavor and/or cloud junkies, who probably suffer more from an oral or hand fixation than any out of control nicotine habit. I’d recommend DTL/sub-ohm devices that are easy to use and will get you used to the idea of swapping coils and plugging in your fix while opening you up to the incredible world of flavor and cumulonimbus action that vaping has to offer.

Picking The Right Ecig Tank

When it comes to choosing a tank, it depends largely on what mod you’ve purchased. It’s a good idea to pick a tank that offers coil head options which will allow you to explore the full output range of your mod. Research the vape mod you’ve chosen. See whether it comes in a kit with a tank made by the same brand. If so then you’ve found your match.

If a kit isn’t availabe, the first thing to check is whether the diameter of the tank you’re looking at is the same or under the size of the mod’s upper surface area. You don’t want a top-heavy, unergonomic setup.

If you’re buying on the net, measurements will have to do the job. If your vape mod has an upper surface 24 x 68mm…you’ll need to get a tank that’s 24 mm wide or under at the base. These details are always offered in product pages and sales material and if not, well then you’re either looking at the wrong brand or you’re on the wrong site.

The other most important detail to check up on is the specs of the coil head or heads that come with your tank. Do they fall within the resistance range of your mod? Is their recommended wattage range within your mod? Disregarding limitations can damage your gear and yourself and is likely to send you right back to smoking the nasties!

How Do I Pick The Right Vaping Device And Tank If Not Buying A Complete Kit?

Good question…you need to start by understanding the basics. If you’re going to be using a mod with 18650 or 20700 vape batteries, it’s essential that you understand the dangers. Purchase an external charger and learn the basics of battery safety. Learn your stuff, then set about choosing a mod.

My advice is that you start by choosing a popular vape brand and a well-reviewed mod. As a beginner vaper who’s gunning for a mod and tank set up, as opposed to an all-in-one or pod mod, I’d advise you to aim for 100W max.

It’s best that you limit yourself at first because there’s a lot to explore and if you’re fresh off cigarettes, 0-100W should be more than ample for your purposes. That’s not to say you can’t aim higher…like 200W for example but it’s important you realize that with an increase in power there’s an increase in risk (and possibly price). Especially when you don’t know exactly what you’re doing.

Also, keep in mind that you may have to learn a few controls and if you’re technologically challenged, you probably shouldn’t be vaping, haha! Joke, but seriously a little learning is needed to get the best out of your vape experience.

Learn the basic electronic terms involved in vaping, by reading vape guides and also learn how they relate to vaping specifically. Once you’ve covered this the display reading on almost every mod available will make sense and you’ll find operation easier, not to mention safer.

Are Vape Kits Easy To Set Up?

The most popular brands tend to make set up as easy as can be. Provided you’re not buying something like an RDA (Rebuildable Drip Atomizer) kit where you have to build and install your own coils. Also, that you’ve familiarised yourself with the standard components of a regular Tank Atomizer, ie: coil head, fill method, mouthpiece, airflow, etc.

It’s essential that you read the user manual thoroughly and if it isn’t making sense or the English is unintelligible. Google your gear and find a video or written review of the product. If there’s no material on it…then you’ve got the wrong product. Actually, regardless of how clear the manual is, you should be doing this research before setup.

What Are The Easiest To Use Vape Kits Out There?

How easy you find a given kit is to use depends entirely on your knowledge of the electronic components. The terms involved and your ability to recognize the respective parts of the kit you’ve chosen. Do your research and a wealth of fantastic choices will open up to you.

Personally, I don’t think that all in ones are any easier to use than a box kit with separate components. They might, however, be slightly safer if you’re someone who’s got no intention of learning the fundamentals and you just want to press a button and vape. The thing is, to prolong the life of your vape and to allow you to enjoy your experience, a workable understanding of the science behind vaping is advised.

Which Vape Brand Do I Pick?

I can’t stress the importance of choosing a brand that’s ‘mainstream’, well known and heavily reviewed. There’s a reason why popular vaping and review sites follow a limited number of brands, household names in the industry. Brands like Smok, Innokin, Joyetech, V2, Halo, Wotofo, Aspire, Vaporesso and Eleaf are consumer brands who develop gear according to the highest standards.

Products are well tested and troubleshooting is common knowledge. Their gear is reviewed by a long list of reviewers who know their stuff. Their every move is judged and taken into account so they’re less likely to deliver a product that won’t do you any good!

I've been vaping since 2010 and been cig free ever since. I have been through hundreds of products from cig-a-likes to TC mods and I've lost count of the e-liquids I've tried! Ecigology is here to help you make an informed decision. We know how difficult it can be to choose from all the options out there.
