Mouth To Lung Vs Direct Lung Inhale – Which Are You?

Are You A Mouth To Lung Vaper?

Mouth to lung vaping is when you take a drag of vapor into your mouth before inhaling to the lungs. The vape tanks on the market that cater to this type of user will have a narrower drip tip to create a tighter draw.

Are You A ‘Direct Lung’ Vaper?

As the name would suggest this style of vaping takes a draw direct to lung. This used to be almost exclusively for vapers that used drippers. Recent developments in the world of vaping have seen tanks hit the mass market that allow easy access for all vapers.

These are mainly in the form of sub ohm tanks and have wider bore drip tips and increased airflow. You can also use many direct lung to tanks with atomizer coils above 1.0 Ohms if sub ohm, higher powered vaping isn’t your thing.

I've been vaping since 2010 and been cig free ever since. I have been through hundreds of products from cig-a-likes to TC mods and I've lost count of the e-liquids I've tried! Ecigology is here to help you make an informed decision. We know how difficult it can be to choose from all the options out there.

  1. How about an updated 2018 version of MTL tanks?
    Alot has changed an grew.
There are even genesis tanks coming out again but way better than the ol days.
Maybe even a high end MTL tank list.
    Thank you.

  2. 6 years MTL vaper. PHIL, I agree the about the nautilus 2 air flow ring being a hassell. Ive bought like 4 and they get stuck and a couple came off because they stick and its a bitch to get them open or unstuck from the mod. It’s too bad because unlike the X or really most any brand tank. Its really the only tank that has edged out the original or mini original, flavorwise.

I only vape at around 15 watts so I dont tear through juice, but its going to be small for others. Tried the smok and vaporesso tanks 2016-17 and aspire still is king. Will try Phil’s suggestion with the vapefly.

I get stuck with useless tanks because I’m only buying coils for the one that I use. Which is about 20 tanks being nautilus & mini & 2

    • Hey Jay, If you like your MTL and don’t mind rebuildables then the Digiflavor Siren V3 is excellent. You can use pre-made coils so it’s pretty easy.. I’m lazy when it comes to making my own coils, I can’t be bothered most the time, but I still get on well with it.

I vape with o.7-0.9Ohm coils at around 25W MTL but you can use higher resistance of course.

  3. Most bottom airflow vented tanks leak when the O ring on the atomiser gets damaged by the heat. Since it’s near impossible to buy new O rings, it means throwing away a perfectly good atomiser.

Top airflow vents are better but nearly all of those are only 2ml tanks. Screw TPD, I want a 6ml tank because I’m sick of constantly filling it up.

  4. The Nautilus 2 tank is one that should have gone through a little more testing before reaching the market. While it gives a provides for a great MTL draw, and really good flavor (especially with the Triton Mini Clapton coils), it falls short in several respects – all of which could have been easily remedied with a little more testing. For one, it has a tendency to leak. While that isn’t in and of itself a killer, it isn’t a good thing either. More important is the top-fill debacle. The threading is tight, and any effort to get the top off results in the tank unscrewing from the mod. The bottom, which is pretty much entirely the air flow adjustment ring, is too small to grab when attached to a mod to prevent the whole thing unscrewing. So, what should be a benefit (a quick and easy fill system) becomes an annoying hassle. Finally, the TPD compliant tank (2ml) is just too small – especially if the sub-ohm coils are being used. Even at a modest 12W, with a the air-flow on the tightest setting (I use it on the smallest and half of the next smallest holes), the juice doesn’t last very long. There should definitely be a larger (at least 3ml) tank available for the US market. I bought two of these based on generally very good reviews, but while I haven’t thrown them in the trash, I only use them sparingly. I just wish I had found the Vapefly Nicolas first. It has all the benefits of the Nautilus 2, none of the problems, and I got 2 of them for what I paid for one Nautilus 2. It has. . . Easy top fill. . . Easy plug in coil swap system. . . Holds 3ml of juice. . . Similar air-flow system, but with more options. . . And the flavor is easily just as good. The only advantage of the Nautilus 2 in a head to head comparison is the availability and variety of coils you can use – as the Nautilus 2 can use any Nautilus or Triton Mini coils.

  5. I am a newbie to e-vapors, and I am not familiar with the lingo or things like how easy they are to refill. I know I want a mouth-to-lung vapor thanks to your wonderful evaluations. I smoke Marlboro 100s right now (if that helps). I am looking for a high/deep medium-to-large inhalation. Does anyone find refilling it to be a major inconvenience? Also, if I order one online, and I forget to order more liquid in time, can I buy the liquids at local tobacco shops?
Anyone knowledgeable who can help answer these questions, would be very much appreciated. Whichever one I purchase must last me several months due to financial restraints so really want pick right one for me

  6. Hi Adam,

I just want to say, these suggestions were very helpful and thank you for this post. I was looking for the perfect mouth-to-lung tank and this article took me to the right direction. Here I am thinking I need to purchase another mouth-to-lung device when I could simply use the same mod and just purchase the tank separately. I had purchased 2 types of devices. One was a starter kit to start off in the vaping world which had the wicks from the top and crackles when I vape. The other device I got was Vaporesso Target Mini, which is a step up I guess and claims to cater to cloud chasers and mouth to lung enthusiast (atleast that’s what I was told). So the tank that the Target Mini came with is called Guardian, which had adjustable air flow claiming that it’s capable of mouth-to-lung but it just wasn’t. The airflow was just not tight enough and it didn’t have that long drag that I was looking for. I’ve come across other articles and most have said that the Nautilus Mini was the best tank by far but it’s been quite some time that this tank has been out. So then I looked at reviews for other tanks like VaporFi Rebel and the other aspire tanks but the one that I thought had the greatest freedom in terms of tightness of the airflow was the Nautilus X. So I looked into it more, found others’ review and after seeing the reviews and videos I decided to go with this from your list. And I have to say, this is the one! This allowed me to have that long drag without it flooding my mouth with clouds and or hurting my throat. It fits perfectly well with my Target Mini and it made my mod look even smaller and more discrete. I absolutely love it. The fact that you can adjust it to the point where you can barely see the air hole. Truly gives you the freedom to adjust the tightness. Love it, I’m sold!

The only downside to this tank is the mouth piece but it doesn’t really bother me as long as I can get that long drag without a dry hit and without it flooding my mouth with clouds. Atleast for me, it gave me that mouth-to-lung I was looking for without the crackling and burnt taste from the wick. So once again just wanted to thank you for posting this helpful review of tanks specific to mouth-to-lung seekers such as me. I think now, I can truly say that I am happy with this combination for a good while.

    • Great news Grace,

The Nautilus X tank is my go to tank when I want MTL vape. Just tooting on one as I write this reply 🙂

Worth looking out for the 4ml tank extender as well. Allows double the juice and still looks good.
